Domestic Airline Eases Baggage Allowance Restrictions for International Travelers!
After a short break away from Mandala Resort, enjoying the holidays with friends in New Zealand, we happily made our way home to Vava'u in mid-January.
We arrived to the domestic Real Tonga terminal for check-in and were pleasantly surprised to be offered 23 kg of checked baggage and 7 kg of carry on each!
To take advantage of the increase in weight, we just needed to present our international boarding pass (or outgoing international ticket) showing that we'd arrived into Tonga within 24-hours of the domestic flight.
It's wonderful news that the domestic carrier is able to match the international baggage rules, depsite their smaller aircrafts.
Excess and per kg baggage fees still apply over those new maximums.
We did note that for those traveling locally or outside of those international parameters, the baggage maximum is just 15 kg. Heavier bags may travel, they will just be charged an excess fee and an additional TOP 3 per kg over the 15 kg maximum. If you have additional gear that really needs to make it on the same flight such as extra camera equipment (rather than coming up on the next one if the plane is overloaded) then you can pre-pay a 'must-ride' baggage fee on top of the excess.
Many thanks to Real Tonga for making strides to make domestic travel to Vava'u easier for our international visitors! Malo 'aupito!!
